Berkeley
County Second
oldest county in West Virginia. Created in 1772 from the northern third of Frederick
County (Virginia), and named for Norborne Berkeley (Baron de Botetourti), Colonial
Governor of Virginia from 1768 to 1770. At Bunker Hill, in this county, in 1726,
Morgan Morgan founded the first permanent settlement of record in Western Virginia.

Jefferson
County Formed from Berkeley County in 1801, and named for Thomas Jefferson,
author of the Declaration of Independence and third President of the United States.

Morgan
County Formed in 1820 from parts of Hampshire and Berkeley Counties and named in
honor of General Daniel Morgan, prominent soldier of the Revolution.
