Braxton County Formed in 1836 from parts of Lewis, Kanawha and Nicholas Counties and
named for Carter Braxton, Virginia statesman and signer of the Declaration of
Independence.

Clay County Formed in 1858 from parts of Braxton, Kanawha and Nicholas Counties,
and named in honor of Henry Clay, Kentucky statesman.

Lewis County Created in 1816, from Harrison County and named for Colonel Charles Lewis,
famous soldier and leader among the Virginia Pioneers, who was killed at the Battle of
Point Pleasant in 1774.

Nicholas County Formed in 1818 from parts of Kanawha, Greenbrier and Randolph
Counties, and named for Wilson Cary Nicholas, Governor of Virginia, 1814-1816.

Upshur County Formed in 1851 from Randolph, Barbour, and Lewis Counties and named
for Abel Parker Upshur, distinguished statesman and jurist of Virginia.

Webster County The last county in West Virginia to be created before the separation from
Virginia. Created in 1860 from Nicholas, Braxton and Randolph Counties and named in
honor of Daniel Webster, New England orator and statesman.
