| Bluestone
Dam |
local,
natural, industrial history
Constructed mid-century by a large local
workforce, Bluestone Dam is a monument to
engineering and regional stamina. Guided
tours route visitors along its towering
catwalks and within the dank tunnels beneath
West Virginia's second largest impoundment.
The dam inundated one of the most productive
agricultural valleys in the Virginias, a
great loss to the families who labored to
complete the project. Largely a Mississippi
Basin flood-control project, its completion
has saved millions of dollars and countless
lives.

National Historic District |
industrialist's
mansions, walking tour
On the verge of West Virginia's impoverished
southern coalfields, most travellers are
surprised to find this village of mansions
-- summer residences of early 1900s
industrialists who spent their winters in
New York City and other urban centers far
away. A walking-tour brochure of Bramwell
can be obtained at the town visitor center
and at nearby visitor centers such as that
on I-77 at U.S. 460 at Princeton. Guided
tours are provided intermittently, most
notably during the holiday season.

From 1897 until The Great Depression, The
Grand Hotel at Pence Springs was among West
Virginia's most popular and exclusive
resorts. Today, it is among its best
romantic inns and is a national historic
landmark. Its broad verandas provide
unparalleled views of the Greenbrier Valley
and the 400 acre estate. Still gurgling in a
Victorian springhouse, the bottled waters of
Pence earned "World's Finest" at
the 1904 World's Fair. Through the middle
1900s, the hotel served as the state prison
for women. Cells on the third floor remain
virtually as they did when their residents
left them. Also of interest, the adjacent
Pence Springs Flea Market on the old polo
grounds has attracted more than 135,000
annual visitors for more than 20 years of
Sundays. A historical walking tour of hotel
grounds is available at the front desk.
Pence Springs is 20 miles west of Lewisburg
and the State Fairgrounds on W.Va. 3 and 30
miles south of Interstate 64.
