Bluestone
Country
State Parks and
National Lands |
|
| State and national parks and state forest lands protect two-thirds of
Bluestone Country's high mountain landscape. Hunting and fishing and No. 1 sports in these public lands and in the pasture and woodland beyond. Must-see park areas here include Pipestem State Park, Bluestone Lake, and the Bluestone National Scenic River. |

Bluestone National Scenic River |
|
trails, fishing, canoeing, kayaking
Administered by the National Park Service, the gorge of the Bluestone River protects seemingly-endless cliffs and rock formations overlooking a stony, free-flowing river. Anglers use undeveloped trails to reach its waters. Hikers follow a river-length trail which is developed from Pipestem to Bluestone state parks. Kayakers challenge the river in spring, though flow diminishes rapidly in summer.

Straddling the verge of the Bluestone National Scenic River, Pipestem's trails, lodges, cabins, and golf courses attract thousands of visitors through all seasons. An aerial tram, horseback rides, and stunning views of the Bluestone Canyon and surrounding tablelands are also among the park's popular attractions. Restaurants, an outdoor pool, and a fishing lake make this one of West Virginia's best vacation destination parks. It earns our highest recommendation.
