WVExplorer Focus:
The National Radio-Quiet
Zone
Special Federal standards
operate among the back-valleys of the Allegheny Region,
limiting radio interference at Greenbank Radio Astronomy
Observatory. The observatory and the nearby Sugar Grove
Naval Base use the surrounding mountains to eliminate
radio interference, which is nearly continuous elsewhere
in the East. Diesel-engine shuttles that don't generate
radio interference are used to carry tourists through
the observatory area. See Allegheny Highlands / South, Top
Attractions
for observatory information.
