Potomac Highlands

Welcome to one of the Mountain State's most remote and beautiful regions. For your convenience, we've divided this large area into two parts -- the Allegheny Highlands and Potomac Branches. Please select from the regions below.

Allegheny Highlands
including Spruce Knob, Canaan Valley, Seneca Rocks, and Cass Scenic Railroad

This highland paradise of ski resorts and national forests includes the "roof" of West Virginia. Herein, among the Allegheny Mountains, you'll find the highest point in the state as well as thundering Blackwater Falls and towering Seneca Rocks.

Potomac Branches
including Smoke Hole, Lost River, The Trough, and Shenandoah Mountain

The clear mountain waters that feed the Potomac River originate in this highland between the Allegheny and Shenandoah mountains. Strange rock formations, disappearing rivers, and scenic upland valleys highlight this spectacular region.
