Wineries

Twelve West Virginia wineries host tours and tastings through the southern and central highlands. Among them you'll find hardy varieties of grape that thrive in the rich soil of our high mountains but can weather our harsh winters and brief, temperate summers.

Among West Virginia's highland valleys grow some of the world's most luscious wine grapes, nourished by pure mountain water and wonderfully rich soil.

Our best grapes

Grapes that produce the best West Virginia wines include Concord, Niagara, Delaware, and French hybrid Seyval, Aurore, Foch, Blanc, and Vidal Blanc. Several wineries also produce berry and specialty wines.

Mountain State farmers must grow at least 25 percent of their fruit in state and may buy another 50 percent from other West Virginians. The remaining 25 percent may come from outside sources to allow vinters to create special blends.

Wine making remained much a personal affair in West Virginia into the 1980s, when the passage of the West Virginia Farm Wineries Act allowed for the production and sale of farm-grown wines. West Virginia's first winery opened in the Kanawha Valley at Dunbar in 1856. The wines were aged in cave-like cellars now at the center of Wine Cellar Park.
