Fly Fishing

Several West Virginia streams are designated "fly fishing only." Only conventional fly tackle may be used, and all fish caught must be returned to the water immediately.
 

Year-Round Catch & Release 

Elk River offers a two-mile section from the Elk Springs Campground downstream to the Rose Run bridge in Randolph County.

Back Fork of Elk River begins two miles upstream from Webster Springs and extends upstream four miles.

Cranberry River (1) beginning at the junction of the North and South Forks and extending downstream 4.3 miles to the low-water bridge at Dogway Fork. Access by foot on Monongahela Forest Route 76 from the Cranberry Glades parking area. (2) Nicholas County from the Woodbine Recreation Area downstream 1.2 miles to Camp Splinter (Jakeman Run). Access is by National Forest Route 76 from Richwood.

North Fork of Cranberry River begins at the mouth in Pocahontas County and extending upstream 1/4-mile to the limestone treatment dam. Access is by foot on National Forest Route 76.


Blackwater River begins at the secondary route 29/1 bridge in Blackwater State Park and extending downstream 3.5 miles to the mouth of the North Fork.

North Branch of the Potomac River No.1, 3/4-mile section in Mineral County near Barnum. No.2,  four-mile section just below Blue Hole and extending downstream to the confluence of Piney Swamp Run.

North Fork of the South Branch 3/4-mile section at the Mouth of Seneca Creek near Seneca Rocks Visitor Center in Pendleton County.

Williams River begins two-miles below Tea Creek in Pocahontas County and extends downstream two miles. This stream is accessed by National Forest Route 86.

Seasonal Catch & Release 

Shavers Fork of Cheat River five-mile section in the Monongahela National Forest, north of U.S. 250 in Randolph County, extends from the mouth of Whitemeadow Run downstream to the mouth of McGee Run. It may be reached from National Forest Route 92.

Season: Jan. 1-Oct. 4.
General fishing regulations apply Oct. 5-Dec. 31.

South Branch of the Potomac River begins one mile below U.S. Route 220 at Eagle Rock in Pendleton County and extends downstream one mile.

Season: March 1-May 31.
General regulations apply June 1-Feb. 28.

North Branch of Potomac River  seven-mile section within Maryland's Potomac State Forest six-miles above Jennings Randolph Lake.

Season: Jan. 1-June 15.
General regulations apply June 16-Dec. 31, except daily creel limit and possession limit of two trout during the period.
